This really sucks!

No really. My vacuum broke down earlier this week. We thought about getting the old Oreck fixed until we learned it would cost $168 to do so. No thank you. So, I started looking. Of course the Miele brand started popping up when you google "best vacuum".We went to the vacuum store last night, and I tested one...it was pure heaven. I never thought I would fall in love with a vacuum like that. BUT it's almost $1000. So, of course the MINUTE Scott sees the price tag, his eyes glaze over. The man says "this is the Cadillac of vacuums" . Scott says "well we need to see the Buick then". It's not that we couldn't afford it...Scott just would NOT be able to spend that kind of money on a vacuum. He wouldn't even push it "I'm sure it's fabulous" was his response. And boy was it. So, I said, "well if I can't have that one, then what's the best sucker?" We brought home (just to try it out) this Sanitaire one last night made by Electralux, boy does that thing suck. It had the very same horse power as the $$ Miele one. I was yelling at the kids as I was vacuuming the whole house at 8 pm last night (because I'm crazy that way) , "you better watch out and pick up all your stuff because this guy will suck it up if it's in his path!!" My carpet is all nice and fluffy again. I don't think my vacuum has been working right for a while. Man, you gotta love a good vacuum! Now, I just need to decide if I want one that sucks nearly as well as this one, but has some attachments...or if I just want to go for the pure sucking power. OR, maybe we could spend another $500 and get the Miele that has everything...even this fancy swivel head. It was pure vacuum heaven. Even Hayden thought so, he vacuumed the whole store while we were there. That should be proof enough I need the Miele, Scott are you listening?

Have you tried Dyson? They're pricey, about $300-400 but last forever and are fabulous I hear. That's on my wish list when med school stops sucking our income. I think our $80 vaccuum from Walmart died after day 5. I think you get what you pay for when it comes to vaccuums! Good luck!

I did try the Dyson, and they sell them at the vacuum store, but those don't suck as much as some of the ones I was looking at. Scott can handle the 300-400 $$ range it's the 800-900+ $$ that makes him crazy.

Its so hard to spend lots on something so unglamorous, but then again, it is something you will use so often for the next decade. I know my friend Allison swears by her Hoover windtunnel I think? I like my Dyson. I would NEVER go with a bag again either. I don't care what I'm told about why bags are better.

My parents have a Miele and it really is the nicest vacuum ever. I was sad when we moved away since I couldn't borrow it anymore!

Hmmmm. You know I can drop a load on things. But I say go middle of the road. The most expensive one will break too. And it is probably more expensive than middle of the road ones to have fixed. Delete this comment if you don't want Scott to see it!!!

Oh my gosh, I should've come here first. Our barely a year old vacuum was on it's last legs. Amazon.com has it rated 1 and a half stars. I just got a Walmart $65 special. I am afraid to buy the expensive vacuum and then have it die a year later. Too bad the roomba didn't work out.

Yeah, I have worked out really "needing" the most expensive one. It's nice and all, but that $$ can be spent in other ways. Middle of the road is looking good-as long as it can really suck :) I just like saying that.

I miss the Sears model we bought when we first got married...it was the best and I still have it in the garage and use it for small jobs like cleaning out my car. I think it works better than the thing we have now, but the thing we have now looks better in the closet. Go figure.

My advise, go to Sears.

Heather, I have a Miele and tell Scott THEY ARE WORTH EVERY CENT. Seriously, there is a reason they cost that much. You can get some pretty good models for under a thousand. We've had ours for almost 7 years, it works like it was brand new. I also have two other friends who have one. One of them owns one that is about 13 years old, still runs like a dream.
