Falling Through the Earth

I could really get used to have my sister close by, to go to lunch with, to watch TV with,to go to book club with and yes to keep me laughing. But, alas she will only be here a few more days. We are headed out in a few minutes to go shopping, eat lunch with Hannah, more shopping and home again for the after school rush.

Speaking of book clubs, we had ours last night. We read Falling Through the Earth: A Memoir by Danielle Trussoni. It was about this girl Danielle, her life growing up, and her father's experience in the Vietnam War. The whole Vietnam War thing was quite fascinating. I really didn't know very much about it, and enjoyed learning more. Then last night at book club, we had a quest speaker come. It was a guy in our ward who is a Vietnam Vet. Wow, the stories. The 30 day boat ride over to Vietnam sounded like pure hell, not to mention once he got there. On the boat they had to sleep in bunks 12 high. He said the waters were extremely choppy, if you got sick, you hung your head over and barfed. The vomit would slosh around on the floor. To this day when he enters a new room he is looking for an exit and he likes to be against the wall, so he can see everything that is happening. One of the problems during the war was the enemy wasn't behind any magic line, the enemy was all around them, hiding. Waiting to get them. It really messed with most of these poor men. A lot of them suffer from PTSD-Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. It really was a pretty powerful night. We really have no idea what the military goes through.

Anyway, on to lighter things like getting showered. I started running this morning at 8:30-with like 98% humidity. Poor Hope wants me to hold her, doesn't she get that I am absolutely disgusting?? :) I got a new hair cut yesterday, it's short! I love it, but I need to go "do it" myself this morning. I did go back to Josh and yes he did redeem himself. I decided it wasn't him that was so stale, I was just bored with my hair. Time for a change.

i agree about last night. i've been to a bunch of your clubs in the past - seems like every time i'm in town, its clubbing time. i've liked it in the past, too - but last night was facinating. that man was physically struggling at times & i wanted to give him a big ol' hug. it doesn't hurt that he was a marine, so i was proud. but his stories were touching, scary and sad. i'm so thankful that i haven't had to be a part of war, but that there are brave people out there willing to do the job, to defend our country. good nightm heather & delicious cake, too! everyone needs to make it!

The Viet Nam was was a terrible tim -- even for those of us who were far removed from all the real action. That poor guy.

Oops - not a terrible tim, a terrible TIME!! Duh.

This book sounds great--it's going on my list. The story of the Vietnam Vet is not only interesting, but so, so sad. I can't imagine what soldiers must go through in war...

Don't forget to post a picture of your cute new haircut (or I can just wait and see it in a couple fo days!!! Yay!)

hoo yah...show us your new do...

That book sounds really great. If you like historical fiction you should check out "Flag Of Our Fathers" by James Bradley (I think?). It's the story of the men who raised the flag on Iwa Jima (that famous picture) during WWI. It's a wonderful, heart wrentching book.

oh yeah - that was a good book. i also liked flyboys, but that was a tough one. see, i've known lots of wwII, but not vietnam... it always seemed so dark and depressing. and it is/was. but its also interesting. good choice tara!

Tara can't get enough of Flag of our Fathers. And I'm not mocking. Heather, for some reason, I want to bite you today. In a good way. You are cute.
