Poor Mr. Scrub Jay was happily eating at my bird feed this morning when along came Mr. Red Tailed Hawk and...
feathers!
Usually once a day I hear a bird fly into a window or my sliding glass door. This morning I was brushing Hope's teeth and I heard a BIG thud. Hayden started screaming "MOM! The hawk is eating that blue bird you like!!" That scrub jay comes down to my feeder everyday at about the same time. I have noticed it, and so did the hawk I guess. Apparently, from the eyewitness, the hawk swooped out of nowhere and caught the scrub jay by surprise. There was a bit of a struggle, but the hawk "had really long claws that squished the blue bird all up". Hayden says the squirrel that we don't like because he eats all my bird seed "got mad at the hawk and about fell off the deck trying to save the scrub jay!" The squirrel got a plate of peanuts down on the grass as a token thank you. haha

Wow! Now that's like having the nature channel right in your own backyard....literally!
We all need a friend like the squirrel.
I can hardly wait to hear Hayden's account of that story this weekend.
We have red tailed hawks here, too.
Oh my gosh, I had this happen when we lived in Portland, near a bird refuge. I was sitting in my living room when I saw a big feather explosion out of the corner of my eye. Some little chickadee totally got it. I have to say, I was most delighted when we moved down here and there was a cardinal on my porch one day. I actually called TD at work to tell him.
Holy crap! Hayden probably loved watching that all go down. I love that you left out a thank you to the squirrel.
That is so "circle of life" and all that! Glad to see that Hayden took it well. When a bird flew into our window promptly died I had the 10 year old and 6 year old in hysterics! We had to keep it in the freezer in a shoe box to bury later...then Ike came and 14 days of no power took care of that:)

This sounds like a lead-in for a good Family Home Evening topic. But I'm sorry for the little blue bird. Windows can look like a good escape route.
Thanks for the recipe. I love pumpkin in all forms.
