I remember back in 1984 when MaryLou won gold...it was a summer night...I got so excited about gymnastics, I went outside in my backyard and started doing all kinds of flips and cartwheels. Something magical happened that night, I was good, at least in my 12 year old mind. But watching people that really are good, does motivate you. I have really been enjoying the swimming this Olympics. Honestly, I loved them 4 years ago too. Four years ago, it motivated me, too. In fact I was so motivated I decided I wanted to learn to "swim". Now, I have always been able to swim....I just hated putting my face
in the water...without a mask, or something. So, I went down to the store and got all outfitted. I bought goggles, a swimming cap (my hair was long at the time, and I didn't want
damage, hello!) and nose plugs. I know you are thinking-lovely, nose plugs. I wasn't sure how to put all this stuff on without the help of a mirror. So, I went into the locker room, by the sink, with mirrors, and put everything ON right there. I knew I looked weird. I looked so weird in fact, I scared somebody in the locker room. Really, I made her jump and she made a little scared sound. I just laughed and kept on walking, she couldn't tell who I was. Anyway, one day the nose plugs fell off, and that was that. I put my face in and just swam. Swimming really was kind of a pain, and I really wasn't very good, after all I was "teaching" myself. So, the swimming routine didn't last more that about 6 months. But, I have been thinking about doing it again. Not, the nose plugs mind you, everything else. I want to learn how to do the butterfly, and that cool dolphin kick, and how to do a kick turn (or whatever you call it).
Speaking of the Olympics, how about that Michael Phelps. Isn't he a machine, a robot,
the man when it comes to kicking butt in the pool. He isn't just good, he is amazing. I'm off to go watch him right about now. Good night.

I took my kids swimming yesterday and my girls were totally trying to do the dolphin and butterfly strokes and flips at the wall of the pool--majorly trying to channel their inner Michael Phelps'
That butterfly race was the best ever!! I wasn't expecting a close race and started yelling at the end. Kids thought i was a crazy lady.
He's a total machine. I say go for the swimming thing... a swimmer's body is amazing! Look at Dara Torres! She is awesome!
I agree with you Shelley about Dara Torres, she is amazing too, I love it! Oh my gosh, that race last night was so close I almost died. Best ever is right!!!!
heather - this post just tickled me. i don't exactly know why. but you crack me up! i love you!
I was screaming, too. Michael Phelps is a wonder. I sure hope all the kids saw what he did amd will remember the races because it will probably be another 30 years before anyone ever beats him and we will hear about it at every olympics.
Reading about you with all that swim gear on was making me laugh!!!
I love swimming. I learned how to do the "flip turns" from Michelle Hart. They make me look very cool, except for the times I give myself a total sinus wash and come up coughing!
I think he has inspired many of us on lots of levels. Totally amazing.
Do you remember Hayden screaming "THAT MICHAEL GUY...THAT MICHAEL GUY!" during the last olympic games? He was two and it took some thought to figure out what he was trying to say! I do love the swimming. And I do love Dara. She is an inspiration, even if she does look like a man:)
Thanks Jennifer, I forgot about that Michael guy!! Have you seen Dara all dolled up? She's not so manish. She has some good arms!
I want to learn how to swim for real too! I would even wear the cap and the goggles! I loved watching him swim. It was amazing.
No, I was kidding...I would LOVE to look that. She is just so angular ya know?
